About Testing and Grades

What Is the Program Like?

Our educational programs are tailored to the needs of the student and family. We don't have one curriculum that everyone uses, but will help you develop one that includes what you need, for example:

  1. A period of adjustment or easing into academics (especially for a student who has had a bad experience in a school and needs to regain an interest in learning, confidence in his own abilities, or a happier state away from harmful influences). Students generally develop better communication with parents and their home and local environment during this time. This wouldn't be particularly applicable to you if you have a young child just starting out in "school", as you are already in good communication! In this case, it would probably be a gentle approach to new areas of learning that you will start, as well as you, the parent, becoming accustomed to working with your child on any new methods or materials you want to use.

  2. Studies focusing on your child's strengths, and addressing any weak points. Interests are incorporated into the program, helping motivation. Correct gradient materials are found and recommended to help a student succeed. The curriculum items are chosen for the parent can be comfortable with delivering them as well as the student doing them. A parent can expect to spend some time to get familiar with any subject the student will need help with.

  3. Projects are found or chosen that increase the student's ability to demonstrate competence and responsibility, at home and also utilizing local resources that offer a chance to participate and contribute a worthwhile activity.

Live Oak Academy has a large resource library to help the homeschooling parent get oriented and inspired to create a good sound educational program at home. You will receive a notebook of information and record-keeping materials, standards, and scope and sequence help (what they are learning in schools, what are the components of a subject are). You can use Live Oak library resources for short term check-out or long-term depending on the materials. I will also help you locate curriculum items you need to buy.

The program for a student is generally worked out between parent and academy by talking with the director, discussing in an interview by phone or in person what the goals of the parent are, how the student has done, what they have had trouble with or done well with, and sending samples of student's work. The program is then tailored to the individual family. For young ones it is not intense, but easy and enjoyable.
